In September 2009, the Foundation provided financial support to young architects from the “Marek Rytych Architekt” office in Warsaw. These architects took third place in the international competition: “Interconnection and Communication with the Islands of Today and Tomorrow – BERING STRAIT PROJECT” announced by the Foundation for Peace and Unity, based in Korea. For the first time in history, Polish architects have won a prize in an architectural competition of such importance. Organised under the patronage of the prestigious International Union of Architects – the UIA (http://www.uia-architectes.org/), the contest comprised developing a concept of connecting the two continents of Asia and North America via an 80-kilometre long tunnel below the Bering Strait. After its completion, it will be possible to travel from Beijing to Chicago by train!

This is how the jury evaluated the project of the Polish architects:

“Interconnection and Communication with the Islands of Today and Tomorrow – BERING STRAIT PROJECT”

„The jury unanimously fund that this project represented one of the most successful and unconventional versions of the Symbolic Geometric approach. While it recalls such a visionary 18th century projects like Ledoux’s Cenotaph, by rethinking the sphere as a dematerialized nebula. Streams of energy tunnel through the bedrock and erupt to form a geyser of light composed of colorful interwined glowing cords enclosed within a latticed geodesic sphere. The jury especially commended the capacity of this team’s stunning and original renderings to express their outrageous vision of global unity and world peace”.

The Foundation assisted the young architects in preparing a DVD presentation showing their award-winning concept and in organising their travel to this year's editions of the festivals: LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL and the Singapore DESIGN FESTIVAL, where they presented their concept of connecting the Asian and North American continents.

We also believe that Poland can participate in important world events!
